Profile:
In the world of science, Quantum Dots are a recent creation that use semiconductor material that dynamically changes the properties of matter. Taken literally: "programmable matter." Like their namesake, The Quantum Dots dynamically shift moods, creating complex, orchestral compositions that range from subtle ambient soundscapes to crushing thrashfests. Multi-instrumentalist Eric Sterling and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Dean Blair use state of the art synthesizer technology, alternating melodic & heavy guitars, both live and programmed drums, and masterfully-integrated vocals to create their highly cinematic tracks.
On their impressive new release, "Inventing Reality," The Quantum Dots expertly showcase their diverse talents and defy classification by delving into everything from soothing, ambient electronica, to industrial powernoise. The CD also features the guest-talents of a number of respected U.S. artists, including violinist Jyri Glynn of The Sins and Ned Wahl of Chemlab.
Reviews:
The Quantum Dots were a pleasing surprise, sounding much darker and more complex than expected. Don't mistake them for one of those bands which is just one guy, his keyboard, and a computer. "Inventing Reality" is an almost eighty-minute maze of dark psychedelia, featuring stormy, grinding guitars, room-filling atmosphere, sweeping synth and noise backdrops, and real drumming, with guest musicians filling in some fine details (flute, acoustic guitar, electric violin, and didgeridoo). Vocalist Dean Blair's low, downcast voice reminded me of Judgement of Paris; the music is harder and often unfortunately murkier, but the voice has the same lonely, deliberate resignation in it, moody but not melodramatic. Longer tracks such as "Serotonin" give the band space to work with the expressionistic guitar and vocal effects that seethe and boil in the background of the more elevating ethereal tracks. Find them on SINister Records.
